Right at Home Realty takes part in the 2019 Toronto PRIDE parade

​During Pride Month, the accomplishments of individuals in the LGBTQ community were cause for celebration and conversation. This was also a time to bring attention to the important LGBTQ civil rights issues being battled in the U.S. and around the world.


Although significant strides of acceptance and inclusion have been made, in some parts of the world, the LGBTQ community continues to face violence and inequality because of who they love, how they look, or who they are. Sexual orientation and gender identity are innate and should never lead to discrimination or abuse.


In the United States, the fight for gay rights has come a long way since the momentous 2015 Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage nationwide. However, the battle for equality is still being fought across the country. In fact, the fight for equal rights continues on a range of issues: from employment and housing discrimination to same-sex adoption and unequal healthcare.


There has also been an epidemic of violent crime against transgender individuals, particularly trans women of color, with trans women fighting against racism, sexism, transphobia, and poverty, putting them at higher risk for violence.


Here in Canada, LGBTQ rights are some of the most advanced in the world. According to resources, Canada has frequently been referred to as one of the most gay-friendly countries, with its largest cities often named among the most gay-friendly cities in the world, and featuring their own gay areas and communities. Same-sex marriages have been legal since 2005, and joint-adoption by same-sex couples is legal in all provinces and territories.


Transgender rights in Canada vary among provinces and territories, but all include procedures for changing legal gender assignment and protections from discrimination. As of August 31, 2018, Canadians can indicate that they do not identify as male or female on their passports.


I am so proud to lead and work for a company that is supportive and inclusive of all. We would like to extend a most sincere “thank you” to everyone who marched with us in the 2019 PRIDE parade in downtown Toronto on Sunday, June 23. This year marked the first time Right at Home Realty officially participated in the parade and we look forward to participating in the future in support of diversity, inclusion and acceptance in our wonderful city.
